NaBH₄
NaBH₄ in organic chemistry: what it does, when to use it and what to watch out for. Covers Reductions, Carbonyl chemistry.
Overview
NaBH₄ is a reagent used in organic chemistry. Below is what it does in each reaction type where it appears.
Reductions
- What it does: Reduces carbonyl → alcohol
- Works on: Aldehydes, ketones
- Watch out for: Usually does not reduce esters/acids
Carbonyl chemistry
- What it does: Aldehyde/ketone reduction
- Product: Alcohol
Example
Acetaldehyde reacts to give Ethanol (MeOH or EtOH, 0 °C–RT).
