DIBAL-H
DIBAL-H in organic chemistry: what it does, when to use it and what to watch out for. Covers Reductions, Carboxylic acids & derivatives.
Overview
DIBAL-H is a reagent used in organic chemistry. Below is what it does in each reaction type where it appears.
Reductions
- What it does: Partial reduction
- Works on: Esters, nitriles
- Watch out for: At low temperature can stop at aldehyde
Carboxylic acids & derivatives
- What it does: Ester → aldehyde
- Important point: Controlled low-temperature reduction
Example
Methyl benzoate reacts to give Benzaldehyde (−78 °C, controlled).
