H₂/Pd-C
H₂/Pd-C in organic chemistry: what it does, when to use it and what to watch out for. Covers Reductions, Alkene reactions, Amines & diazonium chemistry.
Overview
H₂/Pd-C is a reagent used in organic chemistry. Below is what it does in each reaction type where it appears.
Reductions
- What it does: Catalytic hydrogenation
- Works on: Alkenes, alkynes
- Watch out for: Can fully reduce multiple bonds
Alkene reactions
- What it does: Alkene → alkane
- Regiochemistry / stereochemistry: syn addition
- Watch out for: Removes C=C
Amines & diazonium chemistry
- What it does: Nitro reduction
- Product/use: Amine
Example
Propene reacts to give Propane (Metal catalyst surface).
