PCC
PCC in organic chemistry: what it does, when to use it and what to watch out for. Covers Oxidations, Alcohols.
Overview
PCC is a reagent used in organic chemistry. Below is what it does in each reaction type where it appears.
Oxidations
- What it does: 1° alcohol → aldehyde; 2° → ketone
- Works on: Alcohols
- Watch out for: Stops 1° alcohol at aldehyde under anhydrous conditions
Alcohols
- What it does: Oxidation
- Works on: Alcohols
- Watch out for: 1° → aldehyde; 2° → ketone
Example
1-Butanol reacts to give Butanal (Anhydrous, CH₂Cl₂).
